Playful Practice, Variability, and the Art of Resilience

Playful and intelligent practice has many benefits. One of the most powerful is resilience. Resilience is our ability to adapt and absorb the stresses and strains of living in a dynamic and ever-changing body and world.

How can we cultivate resilience? Playful practice can help. Play by nature introduces variability, because play can have elements of the unpredictable and the unexpected, just like life. Through play we explore different ways of moving, responding, behaving. When there is an element of play involved in practice we are more apt to give ourselves permission to explore, try things different ways, and become better motor learners, and better learners in general.  Being able to do things different ways leads to a more resilience adaptable body and mind. This is especially so if we are able to be less hard on ourselves (and others) in the learning process. Self compassion is necessary essential if we want to grow into more resilient beings. I think a playful yet mindful approach helps with all of this.

Carrie Owerko has been teaching yoga and exploring the relationship between body, breath and mind for several years. She holds a Senior Intermediate Iyengar teaching credential and continues her studies with the Iyengar family by traveling to India on a regular basis, as well as by continuous and in-depth studies with her teacher, Patricia Walden.

Over the years she has performed in and co-choreographed many yoga demonstrations, including Live: Light on Life, performed at NYC's City Center during BKS Iyengar's Light on Life US National Book Tour in 2005.

Before studying yoga, Carrie worked as a Movement Analyst after having completed her studies at The Laban Institute in NYC. She studied theatre and dance in college and has spent years exploring human movement, meaning and communication.

Curiosity, openness, and affection are of the utmost importance in her approach to Iyengar Yoga, as is the integration of science, yoga philosophy, and the poetic imagination in the yoga practice. Most importantly, she loves to explore the relationship of discipline and playfulness and is a firm believer in the power of controlled folly.
